Tallyist for Android

Tallyist Support

For Tallyist on Android.

Tallyist keeps an honest count of what you drink so you can see your own pattern. No goals, no streaks, no lectures. It reports, it never grades.

Getting help

The fastest way to reach the developer is to open an issue on the app’s public issue tracker:

https://github.com/semmes/TallyistAndroid/issues. There is a New issue button. A free GitHub account is needed, and issues are public, so personal details from a log are better left out.

Bug reports are most useful with: what you did, what you expected, what happened instead, and your phone model and Android version.

Common questions

How do I log a drink? The + on the Today screen adds one drink per tap. By default that records one standard drink with nothing said about its type, size or strength, and those can be added afterwards or left out entirely. The caption under the counter always says what the next tap will add. Add specific, beside “Logged today”, opens the type, size and strength controls for the times you want them. The home screen widget logs one drink without opening the app, the same way.

How do I fix a mistake? The − on Today removes the most recent drink, with an undo. Any entry can be edited or removed later from History or from a day in the calendar: tap the day, then tap the entry.

How do I record a day where I didn’t drink? On Today, Record no alcohol today. For past days, tap the day in the calendar. “Nothing logged” and “no alcohol” are different facts, and Tallyist records the second only when you say so.

What’s the press and drag on the calendar? Touching and holding a day, then dragging across a stretch of days, gives them all the same answer at once: alcohol-free, or the same number of drinks on each. Days that already have a record are never touched.

What do the calendar colours mean? One blue, light to dark, in four steps: 1 to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 9, and 10 or more. Darker means more drinks. Alcohol-free days get an outline instead of a fill, and a plain cell means nothing was logged either way. The legend under the calendar names the steps.

How do standard drinks work? A standard drink is not the same size everywhere. Settings has three regions, United States at 14 g, United Kingdom at 8 g and Australia at 10 g, and every total re-expresses immediately when it changes. Changing region never changes what was logged, only how it is counted.

Does my log sync between my devices? No. Tallyist for Android has no sync and no sign-in. The log lives on the phone it was logged on. What does carry across is Android’s own backup: if backup is switched on for the device, Android copies the log to a new phone during setup, and can restore it after a reinstall. That is Android’s mechanism rather than the app’s, and the developer is not part of it.

What are the figures on Trends that mention other people? They are published population statistics that ship inside the app, from named and dated surveys, with the source shown on the card. They are not data from other Tallyist users, and the comparison is worked out on your phone. Tallyist compares a figure to a published distribution of the same figure. It sets no target and names no limit.

How do I delete my data? Three steps, and only the first is inside the app.

  1. Entries can be deleted one at a time, from Today, from History, or from a day in the calendar. A recorded alcohol-free day can be cleared the same way. A deletion of this kind hides the entry everywhere in the app, but the record of it stays in storage so that a restored backup does not bring the drink back.
  2. Uninstalling removes everything on the device. The same result without uninstalling is in Android’s Settings app, under Apps, then Tallyist, then Storage and cache, then Clear storage.
  3. A backup Android has already taken outlives both. It is removed in Android’s Settings under Google, then Backup, or in the Google One app under Storage, then Backups.

The privacy policy describes all of this in more detail.
